Gentry AR pharmacy tech preparing prescriptionNow that you have made the decision to earn your pharmacy technician certificate or degree near Gentry AR, you might be thinking about how to select the best school to receive your education and training. Usually the first step is to find colleges that offer the degree or certificate that you are interested in. Many potential students begin by searching for schools that are within commuting distance of their home, and then comparing the cost. While tuition and location are critical factors when picking a school, they are not the only ones. Qualifiers including reputation and accreditation must be considered also. And if you are interested in attending classes in your home by means of your computer as opposed to in a classroom, then searching for an accredited online school will also be included in your vetting process. We will cover these qualifiers and some others that you will want to include when reviewing pharmacy technician schools. But first, let’s discuss what a pharmacy tech does, the diploma and degree options available, and the benefits of online classes.

The Role of Pharmacy Techs

Gentry AR pharmacy technician dispensing medsPharmacy technicians have many job duties, but their main responsibility is to dispense prescription medicines. Since they are not licensed, when filling prescriptions they must work under the supervision of a licensed Gentry AR pharmacist. They must also have excellent customer service skills since they will be interacting directly with customers. Their attention to detail must be precise when filling prescription medications per the pharmacist’s instructions. And they need to have a comprehensive knowledge of pharmaceutical terminology so that they can help customers with understanding directions for their medications in addition to other pharmaceutical information and literature. However, under no circumstance should they ever offer medical advice relating to prescriptions or anything else. Any such questions would be handled by the pharmacist. Some of the regular daily tasks a pharmacy tech might perform are:

  • Greet and assist customers with medications and other questions
  • Dispense prescription medicines under pharmacist direction
  • Enter prescription and customer data into pharmacy computer system
  • Call customers when their prescriptions are ready for pick-up
  • Prepare and submit customer insurance claim forms
  • Re-supply shelves and monitor and control inventory

Due to the nature of their job, pharmacy technicians will spend most of their working day on their feet. And working evenings and weekends is also typical, especially for newer technicians with lower seniority. But the payoff for occasional tired and aching feet or sometimes having to work after hours is a very fulfilling career helping people with their health and wellness.

Pharmacy Tech Degrees and Diplomas

Gentry AR pharmacy medication supply shelvesIndividuals desiring to enroll in a pharmacy technician program are qualified as long as they have a high school diploma or a GED. There are generally two options to training to be a technician whether you enroll in a community college or a vocational school. The first is to attain a certificate or a diploma, which normally can be finished in a year or less. These programs present an introduction to the various elements of pharmacology and pharmaceutical technology and typically include classroom and lab training. Many programs also include an internship at {an approved|an accepted Gentry AR pharmacy or other facility. The second option is the Associate Degree program which typically takes about 2 years of studies. Although not required for most entry level positions, it does provide a more extensive education and opens doors to more advanced positions or education in the future. Each program should provide the proper amount of training to pass the Pharmacy Technician Certification Examination should the graduate decide to get certified.

Pharmacist Technician Certifications Available

It is not required to earn certification in all states, but many graduates of pharmacy technician colleges opt to become certified in order to be more qualified when seeking employment. Additionally, many Gentry AR pharmacies will only hire a tech that is certified. There are 2 organizations that offer certification:

  • National Healthcareer Association (NHA).
  • Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB).

The NHA requires that the applicant be 18 years or older, has graduated from high school, has completed a training program, and has one or more years of work experience. The PTCB only requires that the applicant has a high school diploma and passes their exam. Recertification is mandated every 2 years by both programs, which may be fulfilled by completing 20 hours of continuing education.

Pharmacy Technician Colleges Online

woman attending pharmacy tech school online in Gentry ARBefore choosing a pharmacist tech online program, it’s important to understand that most programs do require a portion of the training be completed in a clinical setting. This is typically satisfied in a local Gentry pharmacy or health center through an internship program. Students often will have the opportunity to work with an experienced pharmacy technician so as to acquire some real world experience. Fortunately the balance or non-clinical training can be taken online in your Gentry AR home or via any available computer. This option is more accommodating for most students, notably for those who continue to work while acquiring their degree or certificate. And online programs are sometimes more affordable than traditional options. Tuition and costs for driving and course materials may be decreased significantly. With both the clinical and the online training, a comprehensive education is offered. But not all online schools are accredited, which is important for obtaining certification and employment (more on accreditation later). So confirm that any online school you are considering is accredited by an acknowledged accrediting organization, for example the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). If you are disciplined enough to study with a less structured form of education, then online classes may be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask Pharmacy Tech Colleges

Once you have determined whether you wish to obtain a certificate or degree, and if you prefer to enroll in an online school or go to classes on campus, you can start to target your school alternatives. There are many pharmacist tech schools to select from in the Gentry AR area and throughout the United States, so you must create a list of qualifying questions so that you can contrast colleges and trade schools. As we covered in our introduction, you will probably initially look for colleges that are within both your financial budget and driving distance from your Gentry residence. If you are able to move or are going to enroll in an online pharmacy tech school, then location may not be significant. But there are several other issues that you need to consider in order to effectively compare schools. The questions below will help you in gathering that information and help you to make your ultimate choice.

Is the Pharmacist Tech Program Accredited? Many pharmacist tech programs and vocational schools have earned a regional or national accreditation. One of the most respected accrediting agencies is the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). Programs earning accreditation from the ASHP have been screened and certified to provide a comprehensive quality education. Online schools may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which deals solely with online or distance learning. Be sure to verify that the degree or certificate program together with the college you choose are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency. In addition to helping guarantee that you receive a quality education, it may help in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Also, certification may require that the program of training is accredited. And a number of Gentry AR employers will only hire entry level employees that have graduated from an accredited program.

Does the College Prepare You for Certification? Certification is not required in every state, but a number of pharmacies desire that the technicians they hire are certified. The pharmacy technician program should prep its students to pass the NHA or the PTCB exam. Students planning on obtaining NHA certification will additionally need one year of professional experience. This requirement can be fulfilled by participating in a school sponsored internship program.

Does the College Offer Internship Programs? As we just discussed, the NHA requires a year of job experience for certification, which may be fulfilled with an internship program. Perhaps the best way to get practical clinical experience as a pharmacy technician is to train out in the field. Most pharmacy technician degree or certificate programs also require clinical training in order to graduate and an internship is an excellent way to fulfill the requirement. Ask if the schools have associations with Gentry AR area pharmacies, hospitals, or clinics for internship programs.

Does the College Offer Job Placement Assistance? Finding that initial job in Gentry AR upon graduation, particularly with no prior experience, can be a daunting undertaking without some support. Find out if the colleges you are considering have job assistance programs. If they do, find out what their job placement rates are. A higher job placement rate is an indication that the school has a good reputation within the field generating demand for its graduates. It also signifies that it has a substantial network of employer relationships where it can place graduates.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the college they select will have to be within travelling distance of their Gentry AR residence. Those who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the pharmacist technician program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the pharmacist tech college you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Gentry AR area, make sure that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.

Gentry, Arkansas

Gentry is a city in Benton County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 3,158 at the 2010 census.[3] The city was founded in the Ozark Mountains in 1894 along what would become the Kansas City Southern Railroad. The city's prior prosperity in the orchard industry, especially apples, was further strengthened by the rail connection. Following the decline of the apple industry in the 1930s, Gentry shifted its economy towards poultry along with many other areas of northwest Arkansas.[4] Today, Gentry is located within the Fayetteville-Springdale-Rogers Metropolitan Area. Gentry is known for the Wild Wilderness Drive-Through Safari, located 2 miles (3 km) north of the city limits.

Gentry began as a rural Ozark agricultural community named Orchard City. Located in western Benton County, it was known for its apple orchards and other produce. The town began to grow when the Kansas City Southern Railroad was constructed through the town. In 1894, residents of the community petitioned the county to officially incorporate, and the city's name was changed to Gentry, after an official in charge of the construction of the railroad.

The railroad company built a new depot in Gentry in 1926-1927. It was known as one of the nicest depots on the railway line. A banquet was held for the grand opening, and railway officials arrived on a special train to commemorate the event. Four to six passenger trains a week came through Gentry until passenger service was discontinued in 1964.
