Of course the initial step is to find colleges that offer the degree or diploma that you are interested in. Many potential students begin by searching for colleges that are within commuting distance of their residence, and then comparing the tuitions. While tuition and location are important factors when deciding on a college, they are not the only ones. Qualifiers such as accreditation and reputation must be taken into account as well. And if you are interested in studying in your home in front of your computer instead of in a classroom, then finding an accredited online school will also be included in your vetting process. We will go over these qualifications and some others that you will want to include when reviewing pharmacy technician schools. But to begin with, let’s take a look at what a pharmacy technician does, the degree and certification options available, and the advantages of online programs.

The Role of Pharmacy Technicians

Rupert WV pharmacy technician dispensing medsPharmacy technicians have multiple job responsibilities, but their principal responsibility is to dispense prescription medicines. Because they are not licensed, when filling prescriptions they must perform under the management of a licensed Rupert WV pharmacist. They must also have excellent customer service abilities since they will be dealing directly with customers. Their attention to detail must be absolute when filling prescription drugs per the pharmacist’s instructions. And they must have a comprehensive knowledge of pharmaceutical terms so that they can assist customers with understanding directions for their prescriptions as well as other pharmaceutical information and literature. However, under no situation should they ever give medical advice pertaining to prescriptions or anything else. All such questions should be directed to the pharmacist. Some of the common daily functions a pharmacy technician may perform are:

  • Receive and assist customers with prescriptions and other questions
  • Fill prescription drugs under pharmacist direction
  • Add prescription and customer data into pharmacy computer system
  • Call customers when their medications are ready for pick-up
  • Complete and submit customer insurance claim forms
  • Stock shelves and monitor and manage inventory

Due to the nature of their profession, pharmacy technicians will spend most of their working day standing. And working evenings and weekends is also very common, especially for newer technicians with low seniority. But the reward for occasional tired and aching feet or occasionally having to work off-hours is an extremely gratifying career assisting people with their health and wellness.

Pharmacy Technician Certificates and Degrees

Rupert WV pharmacy medication supply shelvesStudents desiring to enroll in a pharmacy technician college are qualified as long as they have a high school diploma or equivalent. There are generally 2 alternatives to training to be a tech regardless if you enroll in a community college or a trade school. The first is to earn a diploma or a certificate, which normally can be completed in a year or less. These programs present an overview to the different facets of pharmacology and pharmaceutical technology and usually include lab and classroom training. Numerous programs also require an internship at {an approved|an accepted Rupert WV pharmacy or other facility. The second option is the Associate Degree program which normally involves about two years of studies. Although not needed for most entry level positions, it does furnish a more in depth education and opens doors to more advanced positions or education in the future. Each program can provide the necessary level of training to pass the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam should the graduate choose to become certified.

Pharmacy Tech Certifications Offered

Certification is not required in all states, but many graduates of pharmacy technician colleges elect to become certified so as to be more competitive when seeking employment. Also, a number of Rupert WV pharmacies will only employ a technician that is certified. There are 2 organizations that offer certification:

  • National Healthcareer Association (NHA).
  • Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB).

The NHA requires that the candidate be 18 years or older, be a high school graduate, has completed a training program, and has at least one year of professional experience. The PTCB just requires that the candidate has graduated high school and passes their exam. Recertification is required every 2 years by both programs, which may be fulfilled by completing 20 hours of continuing education.

Pharmacy Tech Schools Online

woman attending pharmacy tech school online in Rupert WVPrior to choosing a pharmacy technician online college, it’s necessary to understand that the majority of programs do require a portion of the training be conducted in a clinical setting. This is typically satisfied in an area Rupert pharmacy or health center through an internship program. Students often will have the opportunity to work with a seasoned pharmacy tech so as to obtain some real world experience. Fortunately the balance or non-clinical training can be taken over the internet in your Rupert WV home or via any available computer. This alternative is more practical for many students, notably for those who keep working while earning their certificate or degree. And online colleges are sometimes more affordable than classroom options. Tuition and costs for commuting and course materials may be reduced substantially. With both the clinical and the online training, a comprehensive education is offered. But not all online programs are accredited, which is critical for securing certification and employment (more on accreditation later). So confirm that each online program you are reviewing is accredited by an acknowledged accrediting agency, for instance the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). If you are dedicated enough to study with a less supervised form of education, then online classes might be the right choice for you.

Points to Ask Pharmacist Tech Schools

After you have determined whether you would like to obtain a certificate or degree, and if you want to enroll in an online college or attend classes on campus, you can start to narrow your school alternatives. There are many pharmacy technician programs to select from in the Rupert WV area and throughout the United States, so you need to create a list of qualifying questions so that you can compare community colleges and trade schools. As we covered in our introduction, you will undoubtedly first start looking for schools that are within both your financial budget and commuting distance from your Rupert home. If you are able to relocate or are have decided to enroll in an online pharmacy tech program, then location may not be significant. But there are several other variables that you need to take into consideration so that you may adequately compare schools. The following questions will help you to gather that information and help you to make your ultimate decision.

Is the Pharmacist Technician College Accredited? Many pharmacy technician colleges and vocational schools have acquired a national or regional accreditation. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). Colleges earning accreditation from the ASHP have been screened and certified to offer a comprehensive quality education. Online schools may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which deals exclusively with online or distance education. Don’t forget to verify that the certificate or degree program together with the school you select are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization. Along with helping make sure that you obtain a quality education, it can help in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited schools. Also, certification may require that the training program is accredited. And a number of Rupert WV employers will only hire entry level employees that have graduated from an accredited program.

Does the College Ready You for Certification? Certification is not required in every state, but a number of pharmacies desire that the technicians they employ are certified. The pharmacist technician school needs to prepare its students to pass the PTCB or the NHA examination. Students planning on obtaining NHA certification will also need one year of job experience. This qualification can be met by entering a school sponsored internship program.

Does the College Provide Internship Programs? As we previously covered, the NHA mandates a year of professional experience for certification, which can be met by means of an internship program. Perhaps the best way to obtain hands on clinical experience as a pharmacy technician is to work out in the field. Most pharmacy technician certificate or degree programs also require practical training prior to graduation and an internship is an excellent way to satisfy the requirement. Check if the programs have associations with Rupert WV area pharmacies, hospitals, or clinics for internship programs.

Does the College Give Job Placement Assistance? Finding that first position in Rupert WV upon graduation, especially with no experience, can be a difficult task without any help. Find out if the schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs. If they do, ask what their job placement rates are. A high job placement rate is an indication that the college has an excellent reputation within the profession creating demand for its graduates. It also means that it has a large network of employer relationships where it can refer graduating students.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they choose will need to be within driving distance of their Rupert WV home. Individuals who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the pharmacist technician program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the pharmacist tech program you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Rupert WV area, check that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.
